The City Council is the legislative and policy-making body for the City of Durham. Comprised of seven members, three members are elected from specific wards, three are at-large members and the Mayor. The terms for City Council seats are staggered, and nonpartisan elections are held every two years.

Recreation Advisory Commission

The mission of the Recreation Advisory Commission is to advocate for Durham Parks and Recreation and the Durham community. The Recreation Advisory Commission works with the director of recreation and makes recommendations regarding recreation programs, facilities, resources and needs of the city. The commission consists of nine members appointed by the City Council. Members serve without compensation and must reside within the corporate city limits. City and County taxes must not reflect any delinquency at the time of submission of the application.

Master Plan Steering Committee

The Steering Committee will be heading up the master planning process, from collecting information at residents’ meetings to sorting through data to determine future system priorities to presenting the results to elected officials. They are residents who are passionate about parks and recreation opportunities for groups they work with and also able to understand the needs and passions of other groups.
